Amber: I worked as a Crew Attendant in the Air Force for 6 years. It was a very rewarding role and I gained so many skills that no Uni degree could possibly provide.
With my husband living in Geelong and I in Canberra, the distance took its toll after a while. It was time to put our relationship first, so I discharged and followed my husband to Geelong.
With the dream of one day owning my own B&B, I knew my best chance of success was to study small business. I completed a TAFE course self-paced online, whilst working at various jobs over a 2 year period. What I really loved about the course, was that the assessments worked towards planning the set up and operation of your business.
We finally found our dream B&B in Rutherglen, VIC – a beautiful wine region by the Murray. After two months of solid set up the business, Amberesque B&B, an old bank on the Main Street of Rutherglen, was born! Having forecasted low occupancy in the initial 4 months, we were pleasantly surprised with a steady stream of bookings!
Now 8 months into business, we just celebrated our 100th couple and are stoked to have already reached No.2 on Trip Advisor!
My advice to Defence members preparing to discharge include the following:
1. Have a clear plan of what you want to do next.
2. Don’t be discouraged if you may not get to do exactly what you want to do straight away. Working odd jobs and studying will be the stepping stones to reaching your dreams.
3. Don’t underestimate the many skills you learned while in Defence and use these to your advantage to sell yourself to potential employers or transfer them into a new role in the civilian world.
