Introducing Jennifer….

NAVY Veteran

Jennifer Army Reserves Veteran

Jennifer joined the Army Reserves while at university and it helped her get a terrific job in her field. Here is her story.

Jennifer: I joined the Australian Army Reserves in 2003 motivated by my flat mate while we were completing our environmental studies at UQ.

After finishing the recruit training in Kapooka I joined the 25/49 Batallion (Logistics Support as Transport) in Gatton. In 2005 when I completed my university studies, I moved from Gatton to Darwin where I joined Norforce.

I also worked as a park guide for Territory Wildlife Park and Window on the Wetlands.

I discharged from the Army Reserves in 2006.

I loved my time in the Army Reserves as I met new people, made new friends and learn’t a lot of skills including team work, time management, mateship, discipline and perseverance.

After a few years as a park guide for the Northern Territory Government, I decided I needed a new career challenge and therefore applied for an Environmental Officer role at the Department of Construction and Infrastructure.

The interview went well, however, I was not successful in my application.
The feedback for it was assumed lack of experience in roads and the needs for road maintenance.

I was able to impress them and change their decision by letting them know that through my involvement as an Army Reservist with Norforce (transport), I had the opportunity to drive army trucks through all dirt tracks and remote areas identifying erosion issues and therefore felt confident in identifying road conditions in the areas that required road maintenance as well as environmental risk assessments.

I was so happy and thankful as the job opportunity was given to me!

I can say that my environmental career within the construction and infrastructure industry was based on my university studies as well as my Defence force training.

Army Success Story

Introducing Jay

I am now 3 months into my employment with Byrnecut. I have really been enjoying it. It has actually given me an opportunity to gain employment on site as a Paramedic. Which I don’t think I would have gotten if I want working for Byrnecut.

Once again thanks for the opportunity to get into the industry.
